The Rundown: Mike Gundy on Boise State and the upcoming Conference Play

0

Mike Gundy held his weekly press conference at Boone Pickens Stadium on Monday. As he did so, he looked back at the game in Boise State and shared what he thought went well and how his team played. He also discussed OSU’s prospects for continuing conference play this week, assessed the coaching staff’s performance to date, and more.

  • “We released the players until late in the evening so that the coaches could try to be caught by the trip. Boys are fine. ”
  • “We blocked a lot better. We got the guys together pretty well. The return went well. The defense played very well in the second half. I think the coaching is great. Punter made a huge difference. And then Jason Taylor made a nice game by getting his hands on the field goal attempt. I’m happy about 3-0. I’m looking forward to the competition this week. “
  • “I was trying to get Cale Cabbiness up there [dancing] after the game. His dancing skills are not good at all. Very stiff and really shy. But a great moment. I wanted him to be able to enjoy it. “
  • “Cale played on Gunnar’s baseball team when he was little. Good boy, do it every day. A perfect example of a coach telling players that they never know when they will get a chance. “
  • “You had to adapt and master many situations this year, different things that are a bit unusual. Take a look around the country and you might have 4 or 5 teams playing exceptionally well right now and everyone else is essentially beating themselves. Our players understand what can really hurt you as a football team. “
  • “You missed the call,” says Gundy of the rough handling of the passers-by call against Brock Martin.
  • “Bad breaks and crooked referees,” he adds.
  • “We’ll know more on Wednesday,” he says of the recipients’ health.
  • “I’ve never started two real newbies in one position and I’ve done it several times this year.”
  • “We have a QB run game. Spencer is a good runner. He has to let the ball run. Sometimes he has to do that based on the scheme that we see. “
  • “Jason Taylor has experience and has been involved in big situations. Seems to play better in games than people expect. He’s committed to the team, he’s tough. “
  • “Jaylen Warren, it was said on the street that he was a good player, that he was selfless, that he was tough. So far it is considered true. Blocked like a tight end. Runs hard. He is very valuable. “
  • “He [Jaylen Warren] will get its bearers. “
  • “[Jim Knowles] is smart enough to try to fix something instead of being stubborn. I wasn’t worried [about him early at OSU]. I’ve said this before. He thinks differently from people. He’s a guy from Philadelphia with an Ivy League degree. It’s a little different from what we do every day in this league. Then he was with Duke. His approach to our players is a bit rougher and more cerebral than what regular coaches are. He’s a Street of Philly guy and he’s an Ivy League guy. He’s on this guy all the time. More aggressive than most coaches are today. He’s got a pretty good mix as he understands it. “
  • “Kasey Dunn is fine. Is it difficult for him? Sure it is. When you’re in the situation we were in last year and this year again at wideout, you have to give in and give up some coaching philosophies to try to do your best to give the team a chance to win. You play the hand that is dealt to you. He did a good job. His patience was really good. It’s hard to practice, isn’t it? You have to be really careful. Another guy goes down and you’re in the full house wishbone. “
  • “The offensive line effectively blocked. We have had several times in this game where our backs were on the line of the scrimmage and the air strike. From here it gets more difficult. Boise State’s depth isn’t what it has in the Big 12. Therefore it is getting more difficult for us from week to week to rush football. “
  • “Hunter Woodard played well. He was a teammate in the game. Played really well. “
  • “I thought we rushed the quarterback and did it consistently.” [against Boise State]. My message to the team was that Boise is a quick starter. They do a good job planning the game’s first 20 games. You have to try to adjust their intensity early in the game and it calms down. “
  • “The way the reorientation for our conference went, it couldn’t have gone better. Period. I know: In my opinion, the schools involved will help to drive the market up [for the Big 12] based on what it was six months ago. “
