There is an opportunity for us to deepen our security and defense partnership: Boris Johnson

The British Prime Minister arrived in Ahmedabad today for a two-day official visit to India. The visit was planned for January 2021, but did not take place due to the corona pandemic.

The UK Prime Minister would push for job-creating investment. He would also try to persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi to side with the West against Russia. India abstained from voting at the United Nations last month condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Although India is a member of Quad, it continues to trade with Russia.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson started his two-day visit to India from Gujarat. His visit focuses on strengthening bilateral relations in the areas of defence, security and trade. Johnson landed in Ahmedabad and was warmly welcomed. During his visit to Sabarmati Ashram he was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupesh Patel.

Johnson met Adani Group leader Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad. Adani tweeted: “It is my honor to host Boris Johnson, the first British Prime Minister to visit Gujarat, at Adani headquarters. We are happy to support the climate and sustainability agenda with a focus on renewable energy, green H2 and new energies. Will also work with UK companies to co-develop defense and aerospace technologies.” Johnson also visited a JCB factory with Gujarat Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Johnson said he hopes Britain will strike another free trade deal with India by the end of the year. The British and Indian companies are expected to announce investments and export deals worth over £1 billion in areas ranging from software development to healthcare.
