Suspects of fatal knife stabbing of Hyogo woman who is still on the run

A 28-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Friday at her apartment complex in Amagasaki city, Hyogo Prefecture, with a suspect apparently escaping on a scooter, police said.

Sayaka Morimoto, a doctor’s assistant, was attacked on the grounds of the residential complex in the suburb of Osaka, and the suspect was described as a young man. A delivery man called an ambulance around 8:20 pm and said that “a man may be in his twenties or thirties” stabbed the woman.

Morimoto and the suspect are said to have known each other, said an investigation source.

Morimoto was found in the apartment’s bicycle rack and was facedown with multiple stab wounds in his back. She was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, police said, adding that no weapons were found at the scene.

According to the police, recordings from a security camera showed a man dressed in black who entered a passage to a bicycle parking space shortly before the knife was stabbed and later fled.

Local residents and others said large stains of blood were seen in the passageway, suggesting that Morimoto, who is believed to live alone in the apartment, was stabbed to death there.

Police believe she was attacked immediately upon returning home, adding that a backpack containing her driver’s license and other items was found near the site. Police said they had already confiscated a scooter with apparent traces of blood that was suspected of being used by the attacker.

The apartment is located on Route 2 of the city, about 350 meters from Amagasaki Station on the Hanshin Electric Railway in Hyogo Prefecture.
