Every four years, the Olympics offer some of the best athletes in the United States a chance to compete for medals. Usually these are not typical names as the Olympic Games have many specialty sports such as javelin throwing, synchronized swimming, or diving to name a few. On the other hand are some of the Major US Sports are still represented in the Olympics, such as soccer, baseball, and basketball.
On his return to the Olympics, the U.S. baseball and softball teams showed up on a grand scale, but ended up with a similar heartbreak for each of the teams.
The softball team got off to a dominant start at the Olympics, winning the first three games shut-out style. The next two games were close 2-1 wins over Japan and Australia and prepared for the gold medal rematch against Japan. The rating turned out to be the downfall of the United States and ended with them taking silver.
With the MLB not allowing active MLB players to compete in the Olympics, the U.S. baseball team consisted mostly of veterans with MLB experience and young emerging stars who make their way to a major league roster. That combination of leadership and youth was good enough to lead the US to the gold medal game. The Americans, however, had to settle for silver as they were beaten by Japan, an Olympic team that had a multitude of professionals playing in Nippon Professional baseball, including the former Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.
The US women Soccer team did not do better than these teams and won a bronze medal at these Olympics. On the positive side, in contrast to the US men’s national team, they qualified for the Olympic Games. For Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe, as well as for other seasoned veterans who had a decisive influence on the team due to the fact that the Olympic Games only take place every four years, these Olympic Games were possibly the last hurray.
The US basketball teams have all finished with the best success of the major sports.
the US men’s basketball team had a cold start against a talented French team with lots of NBA talent, such as former Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert and veteran role player Evan Fournier. Team USA recovered, however, and won the rest of the games by a large margin, while retaliating in the gold medal game against France. NBA MVP candidate year after year, Kevin Durant led Team USA with the support of his star cast including Portland Trail Blazer Damian Lillard and Boston Celtic Jayson Tatum.
the US women’s basketball Team got off to a hot start, beating everyone in the group stage and continuing their dominance en route to a gold medal by beating Japan 90-75. The Bigs led the team with Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart, each with an average of 16 points per game. The gold medal was the seventh in a row for the US at the event.
Overall, each of the major sports the US is known for has mixed well with all of the events at this year’s Olympics.
