Razorbacks kick off the fall season strongly at UCA Invite


CONWAY, ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team had a successful weekend to kick off the fall season at the UCA Invitational with a total of 19 wins.

The Razorbacks were competed during the two-day invitation tournament from Central Arkansas, Harding, Arkansas State, Southern Arkansas, McNeese State, Oral Roberts, Kansas City, Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, and Murray State.

Arkansas took 10 individual wins with three Razorbacks who achieved top placements in their flights. Sophomore Morgan Cross impressed with her two wins over Canete (7-5, 5-7, 10-3) from Central Oklahoma and Britt (6-2.6-2) from Harding. Cross finished victoriously, defeating Fuka Nonoyama (6-4, 6-4).

The newest addition to the roster, Transfer Lenka Stara, took her first wins as a pig. Stara beat her first two opponents in straight sets, MSU’s Geolier (6-2, 6-2) and Oklahoma City’s Brocks (6-3, 6-0). At the end of her first weekend as a razorback, Stara fought in a three-set tiebreaker to defeat Central Arkansas’ Jaeun Lee (6-2, 3-6, 10-4).

Senior Laura Rijkers shone with her three wins and took the top position in the third round. Rijkers took two wins on the first day against Allison Carpenter from Harding (6-4, 6-1) and Yada Vasupongchai from UCA (6-2, 6-4) and defeated Kreugel from Murray State (7-5, 6th) . -4) for the championship.

In doubles, both Razorback duos remained unbeaten at the weekend and won their flights. Morgan Cross teamed up with Tatum Rice to quickly defeat Arkansas State pair Rice / Zukic, 6-1, in their first flight. Cross and Rice quickly took the top finish in a 6-2 win over Central Arkansas’ Xin and Nonoyama.

The Razorback duo Lenka Stara and Laura Rijkers reached the quarter-finals in the second flight and defeated the two racers 6-3. Stara and Rijkers fought hard in the final against Vasupongchai and Ishimura from UCA and prevailed 7: 5.

The Razorbacks are continuing their Fall Games in two weeks time when they travel to Waco, Texas to attend Baylor’s HEB Invitational, October 1-3.
